SSI Lay Member’s Day 2012

Monday, April 30th, 2012

The Society of Scribes and Illuminators based in the UK, is one of the most well-established and respected calligraphy societies in the world.

This year’s Lay Members day was another terrific event, and as always we had a great time.  It was really nice meeting fellow calligraphers.

We have now attended five Lay Member Days and are now getting a better measure of which equipment and materials to take along.  This time around we didn’t have so many new products. We worked hard on bringing the correct quantities and as far as I am aware we did not run out of stock on any items.  Once again the same few nibs, inks and pen holders proved very popular.

People commented on our new stands for the inks, which helped them to find the type of inks and colours they were looking for.  It also made the packing and unpacking much easier ;)

SSI Lay Member’s Day 2011

Monday, May 9th, 2011

Saturday 7th May we were at our fourth Society of Scribes and Illuminators Lay Members Day.Despite the recession, this was another packed out Lay Members Day. It’s not often you see hundreds of calligraphers under the one roof!We were very busy again. Our new ranges of inks (FW Acrylic Inks and Dr Martins Bombay Inks) were popular. Members were also happy to see Sharpening Stones back in stock after many years absent.Nibs, nibs, nibsProducts on displayWe eventually got back from London late at night. What a great day and hope to return next year!

CLAS Festival of Calligraphy 2010

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

This year the CLAS Festival of Calligraphy was held at Warwickshire College in Leamington Spa.The CLAS Festival of Calligraphy gives everyone a chance to indulge in calligraphy and lettering. World class tutors teach a variety of courses in lettering. This year’s tutors were Mary Noble, Manny Ling, Ian Garrett, Lin Kerr, Clare Whittaker and Vivien LunnissThe workshops take place during two 2 1/2 day sessions with Monday afternoon free.We were delighted to be asked to attend Monday afternoon. As usual it is very hard to decide what Calligraphy equipment and materials to take to an event. We can’t take it all, and you guessed it we were asked for one type of nib, which we had left behind. Another dilemma we have is what quantities of stock to take. Thankfully we got this about right. We only sold out of three items and one of these we had limited stocks because the supplier is also out of stock. It was great meeting lots of keen calligraphers in a relaxed environment. You could tell the calligraphers were really enjoying the Festival, because every single one of them who wrote us a cheque for payment could not remember what the date was!Paper, Automatic Pens and PaintsInks, inks and inksPen cards and penholdersTins, Pencils and drawing equipment

The Spencerian Study Group

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

The aim of this special group is to promote the understanding, appreciation, study, practice and creative extension of a period of American artistic endeavour now regarded as the Golden Age of Ornamental Penmanship. This outstanding period of American penmanship flourished for seventy-five years from approximately 1850 to 1925 when its demise was brought about by changes in commercial practice and the invention of the typewriter though it continued to a lesser extent into the 1950s.The Spencerian Study Group holds two major workshops a year in the City of York. Meetings are held at St Lawrence’s Hall, Lawrence Street, Walmgate, York. Fixed dates are the second Saturday in April and the last Saturday in September. Between times, members are encouraged to develop their penmanship skills by not only corresponding with others, but exploring creative ideas in a modern context from study day initiatives. Tools and materials are readily available through the group.POSTAL MEMBERSHIP has now been running for two years for those enthusiasts interested in this period of penmanship yet for whatever reason are unable to attend study group meetings. Members receive the quarterly ‘Spencerian Review’ full of news, interesting articles and scans of original penmanship and calligraphy from the period. If you are at all interested in becoming a member of our postal group then please get in touch.Brian G WalkerDownload Spencerian Study Group information sheet for further details

SSI Lay Member’s Day 2009

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Scribblers Stall 1 Lay Member’s Day was again a sell out with all the tickets sold before the event started. This was our second visit to the show so we were more prepared. The doors open early for the stall holders, giving us nearly 2 hours to set up. This time went so quickly. We almost got the layout of the products how we wanted them when we had our first customer. Josie Brown was demonstrating at the show and so quickly made a purchase before she started.
The doors opened at 10:00 and minutes later we were all serving customers. Some of the most popular items purchased included oblique penholders and pointed nibs. Thanks to Joy Daniels from the CSIG demonstrating Copperplate writing, there was much interest in getting the equipment and having a go at this style of lettering. Scribblers Stall
Sales of vintage nibs were good. Luckily I just remembered to pack the nibs moments before we set off to London. Potential customers were disappointment when they learnt we had had some Gillott 303 nibs in stock, which had quickly sold out within a week or two of them being available on our website.

The only period we were quiet was when most of the visitors attended the lecture. This year, Dennis Brown was speaking. I met Dennis for the first time just before he was about to speak. It was great seeing his work up close rather than images on the website.I also met Ewan Clayton. He was selling a wonderful range of Japanese Ink Sticks.

We eventually got back from London late at night. What a great day and I’m hoping we return next year!

SSI Lay Member’s Day 2009

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

SSI The Society of Scribes and Illuminators was founded in 1921 in the UK by early students of Edward Johnston. Each year the SSI has a Lay Member’s Day.

The Society of Scribes and Illuminators (SSI) have invited us to the Lay Member’s Day in April for a second year.We are now planning our stall. I have just dusted down the notes I made from last year. Hopefully we will be better prepared for the rush of customers. Last year, just before the show officially started, I served our first customer. After putting her items in a bag, I turned round to give her the change and bag to see a second customer waiting to be served. By the time I had finished serving the second lady, we were packed out!The majority of our calligraphy materials and equipment stock will be available to purchase on the day. There are three demonstrators this year; Joy Daniels (pointed pen lettering in the Copperplate style), Clare Whittaker (creative books for the calligrapher) and Josie Brown (dry layering techniques in calligraphy)Denis Brown, FSSI, will be giving the Daubney Lecture: Carry Tradition Across Boundaries.

The event will be at King’s College Franklin Wilkins Building, 150 Stamford Street, London, SE1 9NN. King’s College

The Copperplate Special Interest Group

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Copperplate Special Interest GroupThe Copperplate Special Interest Group was founded in 1995 by Jim Linwood to address the needs of pointed pen enthusiasts. Prior to this, there had been a lack of focus for lovers of Copperplate and other pointed pen calligraphy. The aim of the group is to promote Copperplate as a beautiful calligraphic hand.Since the group was set up, interest has grown in the hand, and we now have an enthusiastic membership of over 180 worldwide, incorporating all ranges of ability from the very beginner to some eminent and expert broad-edge calligraphers. We keep our members in touch with four newsletters a year, which include information on nibs, suitable inks and papers, samples of work, hints and tips, events and workshops. We run an Envelope Exchange scheme every six months, and a ‘mentoring’ scheme in which the less experienced can receive help to improve their Copperplate from the more experienced. There is also an ongoing project which culminates in a yearly calendar. We are a friendly and inclusive group, and we welcome new members. Membership is open to anyone who has an interest in Copperplate.Membership is currently £9 per year for UK members, and £13 per year for overseas members. For more information email Joy Daniels at: joydaniels [at] ntlworld [dot] comCopperplate Special Interest Group Logo

SSI Lay Member’s Day 2008 – part 2

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

We have just had a few days holiday in London with the family. We did a lot of the tourist activities like visiting The Natural History Museum, The Science Museum and Madam Tussauds. Amazingly whilst at the Science Museum we bumped in to some friends from Lowestoft. So much was crammed in to our visit that I felt tired for days afterwards. On our way to the Tower of London, looking at the map I saw that we were very close to where the SSI will be holding Lay Member’s Day at the end of the month (26th April). So we took a slight detour so we could see the actual building. The event will be at King’s College Franklin Wilkins Building, 150 Stamford Street, London, SE1 9NN.Lay Member’s Day 2008 detailsKings CollegeIn a previous blog I told you that we have got a local craftsman to produce some bits ready for the show. Well, just before going away we took delivery of the wooden pots. These are made of old English Oak. I am very pleased with them. They are going to be used for displaying items like penholders and Automatic Pencils. May be we should start selling them?Wooden Pots

SSI Lay Member’s Day 2008

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

I am pleased to announce that the Society of Scribes and Illuminators (SSI) have invited us to have a stand at their Lay Member’s Day in April. The SSI was founded in 1921 in the UK by early students of Edward Johnston with the aim of advancing the crafts of writing and illumination. Lay membership was introduced in 1952, and is open to anyone who, through their interest and support, wishes to help the SSI advance and promote the craft of calligraphy. Each year the SSI has a Lay Member’s Day.The majority of our calligraphy materials and equipment stock will be available to purchase on the day. This will be our first ever show, so it is an exciting time for us. I am surprised at how much planning is necessary. At first you think it is just a case of boxing up all the stock and then presenting it nicely on the day. However, I soon realised it is far more involved. There is a lot of preparation to do, but we have got off to a good start. We have to-do lists, to-buy lists and to-organise lists! So far, we have found a local craftsman who is making out of wood a large penholder and nib with the Scribblers logo on the holder. We are going to use this to identify our stand rather than having a printed banner. The craftsman is also making us wooden pots for displaying penholders, brushes and pencils. The hardest bit is deciding how much stock to take? There will be 300 calligraphers there, what if they all want the same product?ssi.gifLay Member’s Day 2008 detailsLay Member’s Day 2007 review
