The Copperplate Special Interest Group was founded in 1995 by Jim Linwood to address the needs of pointed pen enthusiasts. Prior to this, there had been a lack of focus for lovers of Copperplate and other pointed pen calligraphy. The aim of the group is to promote Copperplate as a beautiful calligraphic hand. For the past 10 years Joy Daniels who is based in Northampton, has been running the group.
Since the CSIG was set up, interest has grown in the hand, and we now have an enthusiastic membership of around 180 worldwide, incorporating all ranges of ability from the very beginner to some eminent and expert broad-edge calligraphers. We have close connections with Brian Walker and the Spencerian Study Group.
We keep our members in touch with four newsletters a year, which include information on nibs, suitable inks and papers, samples of work, hints and tips, events and information on any Copperplate workshops being held.
We run an ‘Envelope Exchange’ scheme every six months which anyone can join. The idea is that having one Copperplate envelope to complete each month helps to give your practice some purpose. This is a fun way to make contact with other members of the group, to see other people’s work and to share your own. The Envelope Exchange rounds start in April and November each year.
We’ve also started a ‘Mentoring scheme’ in which the less experienced can receive some help to improve their Copperplate from the more experienced, by sending their work to their mentor in the post and receiving constructive criticism.
We produce a yearly calendar made up of members’ work and a cover designed by Jean Larcher in Paris.
We are a friendly and inclusive group, and welcome new members. Membership is open to anyone who has an interest in Copperplate.
Membership is £12 per year for UK members, and £16 for overseas members. The subscription is renewable in March, but you can join at any time.
